What is Clay Plaster?

Clay plaster is a natural decorative finish made with unfired clay, minerals and pigments. Applied by hand, it creates breathable interior walls and ceilings with soft tonal movement, from refined smooth surfaces to more pronounced textures.

We assess the substrate, detailing and intended use before specifying suitable preparation and the finish. Clay plaster is designed for appropriate interior surfaces; it is not a waterproof coating or a flooring system.

Bespoke samples help you explore colour and texture alongside your lighting, timber, stone and other materials before installation.

Clay Plaster — Frequently Asked Questions

  • Often, provided the substrate is suitable, sound and correctly prepared. Existing coatings, cracks, damp and movement need assessment before specifying the build-up. We confirm the preparation and finish for each project.

  • Clayworks offers refined smooth finishes and more pronounced textures, with natural mineral colours and bespoke options. We develop samples around your interior so you can compare colour, texture and tonal movement in the intended lighting.

  • It can be suitable for selected interior walls and ceilings, but not shower or wet areas, cooking splash zones in direct contact with oils and fats, or floors. Clay plaster is not a waterproof finish. We assess the location and detailing before recommending it.

  • A sample establishes the intended colour and texture, but natural materials and hand application create variation across a larger surface. Lighting, viewing angle and neighbouring materials also affect its appearance. We discuss this character before installation.

  • Follow the care guidance for your installed finish and any glaze. Clayworks allows appropriate cleaning of glazed surfaces with a suitable non-toxic cleaner; do not assume an unglazed finish can be washed. Avoid abrasive treatment and discuss marks or damage with us. Repairs should be assessed by a trained professional.

  • The programme depends on the area, substrate condition, preparation, chosen texture, access and drying conditions. We establish a suitable schedule after assessing your project, including when other trades can return to the space.

  • Each project is quoted around its size, preparation, finish, detailing and access. Send your location, approximate measurements and photographs or drawings so we can discuss a suitable specification and provide the next steps for a quote.
